Mercedes-Benz reclaims spot as world’s No. 1 luxury carmaker

The year 2016 was so far the most successful year for Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz. The Stuttgart-based luxury car maker finally reclaimed the top spot as the world’s premium car manufacturer in terms of sales, beating fellow German high-end automaker BMW.

Mercedes-Benz sold 2,083,888 new vehicles worldwide in 2016, higher than its sales in 2015 by 11.3%. The company breached the 2-million annual sales mark for the first time in its 130-year history, a milestone that can be attributed to its renewed strategy to focus on designing and manufacturing stylish, high-technology vehicles.

Growth drivers

Strong patronage in Europe and China was the main driver of growth for Mercedes-Benz. The brand commanded a double-digit sales increase in the UK, France, Italy, Spain, and Belgium, while China remained as its biggest individual market. In the Asia-Pacific region, the three-pointed star reported best-ever yearly sales in Japan, South Korea, Australia, Taiwan, and Malaysia.

In the Philippines, Mercedes-Benz also posted its highest ever annual sales in 2016. It sold 943 new passenger cars and 79 commercial vehicles which totals 1,022 units throughout the year, based on the official figures released by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI). Moreover, December was the highest selling month ever for the brand locally.

Renaissance in luxury car technology

Mercedes-Benz’s emergence to the top can also be cited as an achievement of Daimler AG Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche, who have been leading a new age in the car maker’s design and technology. He also implemented a strategy anchored on technological excellence and the adaption of an entrepreneurial mindset, ditching the traditional risk-averse culture that used to be inherent to the company.

“With new cars with pioneering design that inspire our customers and with particularly strong growth, we have climbed to the top of the premium segment,” said Zetsche. “And we are accelerating further—with new technologies, products, and services.”
